BIONA ORGANIC GETS 2009 OFF TO A GOOD START WITH MULTIPLE “BEST BUY” AWARDS FROM ETHICAL CONSUMER

Ethical consumer magazine has rated Biona Organic as “best buy” in an ethical survey of butter and margarine categories.  Companies such as Biona Organic, Yeo Valley, Dairy Crest, Arla, Johnson and Johnson (Benecol) and Unilever (Bertolli, Flora, I Can’t Believe…, Stork) were given an Ethiscore out of 20.  In the butter category Biona Organic scored 15.5 out of 20, with Yeo Valley second on 13.
In the Margarine category, Biona Organic again scored 15.5 out of 20, with Suma runners up on 12 out 20.

These scores mean that three Biona Organic products have been rated “Best Buys” by Ethical Consumer magazine:
-          Biona Organic Traditionally Churned Butter 250g– available in salted and unsalted varieties
-          Biona Organic Sunflower Margarine (vegan 250g)
-          Biona Organic Omega 3 Extra Spread Margarine (vegan 250g)
The rating used by Ethical Consumer includes scores in the categories of Environment, Animal Welfare, People (including supply chain and employee welfare), Politics and company ethics.  Biona Organics never use GMOs, hydrogenated fats and has a Proforest certified sustainable source of Palm Oil, which were factors particularly taken into account when compared to the other brands available.  Biona Organics is a range of 100% certified organic products which are also vegetarian, sometimes vegan.  “For butter, ethical consumer’s best buys are the organic brands from Biona… For margarine, Biona is a best buy as it has independent certification for the sustainability of its palm oil supply chain”. – ETHICAL CONSUMER, January/February 2009
Biona Organics Omega 3 Extra Spread was also noted for its use of rapeseed and walnut oils, a healthier alternative to hydrogenated oils used by some competitors.
Biona Organic products are available through independent health stores.
